As manager Neil Lennon speaks out about the departure from Celtic Park of Islam Feruz we have to ask if there is any loyalty in the game we love?

Normally we would just accept that players have their heads turned by either so called ‘bigger clubs’ and more importantly by unscrupulous people who only have their own interest at heart.

There is no doubt Celtic have ‘poached’ players in the past as football’s equivelant of the food chain comes into operation.

The big difference in the case of Feruz is his own personal circumstances.

Saved from a life of danger in war torn Somalia with the help of the great Tommy Burns, Islam was brought to Scotland, his family were housed, he was educated and allowed to live in relative safety, all the help of Celtic Football Club. He was given a ‘new life’ effectively.

However, his talent as a football player wasn’t going unnoticed and this is when the waters become murky. Agents were circling like vultures.

Even so, the boy knows right from wrong.

He has chosen to ignore the people who helped save his life.

Whether he is a success at Chelsea or elsewhere I sincerely hope that Celtic don’t change their stance on helping the vulnerable.

The club and the people involved in allowing Islam Feruz the opportunity to fulfil his dream should hold their heads high. They have acted with the utmost integrity and dignity.

If only Islam did the same.

For those of us old enough to remember, Celtic played in a ‘second’ strip in the mid-nineties that resembled a ‘bumble bee’!

Our heroes of the time included the famous ‘three amigos‘, Dutchman Pierre Van Hooijdonk , the Italian Paulo Di Canio and of course Portuguese star Jorge Cadete.

All three were part of a Tommy Burns team that played some of the best football seen at Celtic Park for many years. Such was their respect for Tommy, they all managed to get to Glasgow in May for the Tommy Burns Tribute Match.

Well, a month from today Celtic will ‘relaunch’ the bumble bee kit, hence the comment from former legend, the Maestro Paul McStay, “there’s a buzz about the place”!

If, we can play with the same style, and add some silverware this time, it will be a like a trip down memory lane. Happy days!

With the news that West Brom and Celtic have agreed to a compensation deal for Tony Mowbray, pundits will now be guessing what kind of manager we’re getting at Paradise.

One thing is certain, a number of the Faithful will be delighted that the new man has at least played for the Hoops. A prerequisite to some.

But what kind of manager is Tony Mowbray?

Will Tony Make His Mark?

Well, as Hibs manager he was always praised for the type of football he played and the fact that he used as many young players as he saw fit.

Even at this point in his career, he was muted as a future Celtic manager.

He then moved to the Coca-Cola Championship in October 2006 and took the West Brom job after Bryan Robson. They failed initially to gain promotion, although they did make the play-offs, then succeeded the following season to gain automatic promotion to the Premiership.

WBA’s stay was short lived, only a season, but during that time Tony and his team won loads of plaudits for the attacking style of football they played.

Which makes me think about what we’re getting.

A manager who loves his team to play attacking football, dare I say ‘the Celtic way’, yet can’t seem to mix this with winning trophies.

Will he be able to find that mix?

Or, are we about to see Tony Mowbray Mark 1 or Tommy Burns Mark 2?

Only time will tell……

Everyone else has thrown some names in the bonnet, I might as well do an update of my opinion.

Ghod, where do some of them come from, like the new Hun strips that are appearing out of the woodwork!

Here goes…

Roberto Martinez, seems OK, if he can bring some style and goals, but remember Tommy Burns had a team with flair that played great football, but didn’t get enough wins.

Liam Brady did the same, good football to watch but didn’t have enough winners. I don’t care about having money in the coffers at Celtic Park, I just want winners.

I did hear that Martinez would bring in some young guys from Barca with a view to them honing their skills here.

That suggestion was well recieved by both Lawwell and the Barca side.

Tony Adams? Feck me, is big Tony back on the drink? He nearly got Pompey relegated! That media mob will print any sh*te.

So, there you have it. Short and sweet.

No matter who the new man is he needs……cash.

Like him or loathe him, Ghordon Strachan showed his true colours yesterday as he took to the centre circle of Celtic Park to address the Faithful in honour of his great friend Tommy Burns.

It was appropriate that, like Tommy, he left his post as manager facing the fans. He didn’t need to thank the support, he didn’t need to address the fans, but he wanted to.

Happy Days!

His speech was like his tenure, full of what he believes. He spoke from the heart.

I’m sure Tommy would have admired his friend for having the courage to tell it the way he sees it.

Everything he said, he meant, and I for one look forward to seeing him as a ‘paying customer’ as he put it, supporting the Hoops.

Ghordon Strachan always fought Celtic’s corner, now that he’s one of us, he can cheer us without the ridcule that comes of managing the Bhoys.

Season 2008/09 finally finished today with only the CIS Cup to show for our efforts whilst unbelievably The Re-arrangers have completed the SPL & Scottish Cup double….

So an immediate word of warning to Tims everywhere and a general safety alert to the public in general as Scotland’s Shame and now also Northern Ireland’s Shame will no doubt “celebrate” their success in their usual manner of  committing “Murder, Assualt and Racial & Secterian Abuse”  wherever they go.

The advice to everyone from here is, stay off the streets and out of the pubs whilst “the scum” are on their normal bigoted celebration trail….

Now I ask all us Bhoys & Ghirls to put all those horrible thoughts behind us and make our way to Paradise on Sunday afternoon to join with Tommy Burns’s family and friends in a “Real Celebration” of a “True Celtic Legend” and one of “The Greatest Men” you could possibly meet in any walk of life.

I really do hope and pray that “The Celtic Faithful” put all  our obvious  dissapointments with the club and the directors to one side on Sunday and show all the football world looking on that we are still “The Greatest Supporters in The World”.

Until Gordon Strachan’s successor is found there will be a continuous stream of media speculation, like we get at any transfer window, if not more so.

So instead of indulging in the game of Owen Coyle, Mark McGhee etc..etc why don’t we try and put together a ‘Celtic Manager Identikit’.

While it’s impossible to please everyone, in fact there’s no chance of that judging by some of the comments made since WGS left, there must be a few characteristics needed to manager the Hoops.

Here goes..

1. He must have played or supported Celtic
2. He must hate the Huns
3. He has to have managed at the top level
4. He has to have a knowledge of the Scottish and European game
5. He must be able to command respect in the dressing room
6. He has to be able to negotiate with the board to release funds

….and most importantly,

He must WANT to manage CELTIC!

Well there it is bhoys and ghirls, any suggestions?

Don’t you find it a bit sinister that the Scottish Premier Reserve League is to be disbanded after this season?

At this time Celtic are sitting comfortable, twelve points clear of their nearest rivals, the wee Huns, (not Hearts, Rangers reserves), and going for eight in a row!

Yip, eight league titles in a row.

You’d have thought the press would have made a bit more of a fuss about this sustained success.

Remember when we were treated to a six page spread in the Daily Rag after the Hitler Youth won the League Cup two seasons ago?

Extolling the wisdom of investing in Murray Park, and how the future of Der Hun was secure with the conveyor belt of talent it would produce.

But no, nothing said. It’s as if winning the Reserve League is incidental, unless the MM win it of course.

So the next best step to stop the Hoops is….. disbandon the league.

Well at least well get another trophy to keep for the cabinet, unless they ask for it back that is!
