And Will They Be Back For Next Season?

Every team gets injuries. There’s no doubt about that.

But three injuries in particular and the timing of them made me wonder‘what if’ these Bhoys had stayed fit.

The players in question are; Shaun Maloney, Jos Hooiveld and Thomas Rogne.

Let’s take them one at a time.

Shaun Maloney: Made his last appearance in the Hoops against Hertz in the Co-Operative Cup quarter final at Celtic Park. That was on the 28th October 2009.

Despite many false dawns and promises of recovery, Maloney never made it back into the first team for the rest of the season. His ‘tendonitis’ injury seems to be more of a mystery than an ailment. It remains to be seen if Shaun will be fit for the new season. Some reports out of Celtic Park point to the injury being ‘career threatening’.

Hopefully not. Shaun showed in the first Derby game of the season at Legoland just what he can do, although both his penalty claims were denied, he was a constant thorn in the MM’s side.

Who knows what impact he might have had if he’d lasted the season?

Jos Hooiveld: Tony Mowbray took the bull by the horns and moved on Gary Caldwell and Captain Calamity Stephen McManus in the January window, just as the fans wanted him to. He then brought in Joos Hoiveld from Denmark to replace them.

The big Dutchman had a fine debut at Hamilton in Celtic’s 1-0 win, thanks to a goal from fellow debutant Morten Rasmussen.

However, Jos was to suffer misfortune in only his second game for the Hoops. Although most of the hype at Kilmarnock was the debut of Robbie Keane, Celtic lost two of the starting back four due to injury that night.

Jos hobbled of with a hamstring injury and didn’t feature again all season.

Thomas Rogne: The young Norwegian came to the club as more of a ‘prospect’ than an immediate player. That soon changed. A mixture of good performances for the ‘stiffs’ and injuries to the first team presented Thomas with a debut at Celtic Park against Dundee United in mid February.

Only a week later he played at the Hunnery and looked to be a good find, only for injury to strike once again. Thomas pulled his hamstring, sound familiar?

Unlike Hooiveld and Maloney, Rogne did pull on the Hoops again last season, making and appearance at Tannadice a full two months after Ipox.

But it didn’t last too long, in fact he didn’t even make half-time before being replaced by Darren O’Dea.

So, would the ‘lost Bhoys’ have made a difference?

We’ll never know!

It looked like being one of those days, again. After only 59 seconds MAF was bundled down in the box for a stonewall penalty only for ‘ref’ Calum Murray to give Accies a free kick! (Bemusing to say the least!)

For the next hour the Bhoys huffed and puffed without making Tomas Cerny in the Hamilton goal do very much.

Then Mogga decided he’d given Zhi and Sammy enough time to do something, replacing the pair with Niall McGinn and new Bhoy Morten Rasmussen.

Within minutes the switch paid off with Ras turning in the box to put the Hoops 1-0 up. A huge sign of relief was felt around New Douglas Park as the breakthrough gave Celtic some breathing space.

Not much happened after the goal, apart from MAF missing a penalty in the final minute after he was bundled off the ball in the area.

A good three points, a clean sheet and a really good display from young Josh Thompson, who slotted in well at the back with debutant Jos Hoiveld.

Glenn & Jos To Form Central Partnership

Now that Jos Hooiveld has put pen to paper and joined the Bhoys it looks increasingly like Tony Mowbray will be doing a ‘double Dutch’ in the centre of his back four.

With Gary Caldwell on his way and the club listening to any offers for captain Stephen McManus, only Darren O’Dea stands in the way of the pair playing together.

That is unless Mogga’s increased bid for Aiden McGeady’s fellow Irish international Sean St Ledger is accepted by Preston North End.

Although the Championship side are playing hardball the player has made it clear he wants to leave Deepdale, and playing in the Hoops is where he wants to be.

Once that piece of business is concluded Tony can concentrate on bolstering his attacking options, although Slovakian Milos Lacny won’t be one of them, the youngster opting to join Sparta Prague.

Celtic Fanzone can exclusively show Jos Hooiveld taking in the fantastic arena that is Celtic Park this afternoon.

The Dutch centre-half is in Glasgow for a medical and is expected to sign as soon as celtic and AIK have reached an agreement.

The 26-year-old was instrumental when AIK won the Swedish title last year and the club are thought to want around 1.5 million euros (£1.35m) for their star.

The building continues as Tony adds more and more quality to the Celtic side he wants to create.

P.S……A Big Thank You to BeachBhoy for taking the pics during his tour of Paradise with his family as part of his 40th Birthday Celebrations…..Hail Hail & A Happy 40th Birthday from All at CelticFanzone.net to Davie “BeachBhoy” O’Rourke….
